Try knoppix for starters, it is a liveCD distro so you don't have to install it ;) there are many other distros based off of knoppix

I suppose a link would help. They have 32-bit and 64-bit versions: http://fedora.redhat.com/download/

I have used fedora (core 3) once before. I liked it ok, I just prefer the feel of the KDE desktop. Fedora did have freeciv which rocked ;)

Lots of people use it. I could have sworn you could download it for free somewhere. I've never installed it myself but no biggie there.

Well the only reason I want 9 is because I got to play with it for a little while at school and I was really starting to like it. Man I couldnt beleave how fast programs loaded. Very fast! Is this a norm for Linux? I mean it seems alot faster then windows. Atleast working around the OS anyway. I was impressed I must say.

Considering the bloat is much smaller in Linux it should all load alot faster. Give it time though....as they try to shove more features in to compete with Windows it will get slower.

Let us know how you like it. :) Fedora Core rocks for me, although I dont use it for gaming like you probably will.

Well my primary use for it is to just get familure with using Linux. Gaming isnt really something I will be doing much if any with it. I'm thinking more along the lines of Networking.

Ok peeps UPS got it here on time and I am now installing it. So far the only hitch has been a package called "bitstream-vera" failed to load.
Ok it's done and all I can say so far is WOW very cool. It's going to take a little time for me to get used to the interface but it seems to be friendly enough so far. Lots to learn here, going to be fun. Still gets me how fast this OS loads programs and software. I did have to go and flip one bit to enable my network connection. Doing updates as I type this. I'm seeing some nice security featrures here also. Anyway I'll report more later.

Good to hear it installed just fine. It used to be almost painful to keep Linux updated, but it's come a long way in the past few years. Just as easy as Windows now.

Is there something special I need to do to get all my pc's to see each other on the network so I can transfer files and such?

You're not trying to use that crappy "browsing" that microsoft half-ass supports in Windows XP are you? If so, give up and start looking for your machines by IP number. I would say to use DNS, but you prob arent running that at home.

Look for a program called "Samba" it is a network file transfer utility that I have never had the chance to use ;)

Ok first of all I wouldnt use the crappy MS thing because I already know it wouldnt work. Second I have been thinking about using the SAMBA it installs with the OS. I just have never used it. I guess I could use DNS I still have a Windows 2003 server hooked up. I'm just looking for the simplest way to share files on a WORGROUP LAN.

Simple way to share files on LAN:
Yes, use SAMBA. I got it configured on my Fedora Core box here at the house. Once you have it set up it works great. I have a mapped drive to the FC box and I backup my important data to it.
